A climate-friendly night train connection from Switzerland to southern Sweden opens exciting possibilities for tour operators and partners in 2026.
From April, travellers can board in Basel in the evening and wake up in Malmö the next morning. With easy options for onward travel to Stockholm and Gothenburg, this is a perfect way to promote sustainable travel and multi-city Nordic itineraries.
Starting 15 April 2026, the EuroNight will operate three times per week year-round from Basel SBB to Malmö, with a route that includes Copenhagen Airport and key German cities. The service is run by SBB in partnership with RDC Deutschland, offering sleeping, couchette, and seating options for around 350 passengers, plus a bistro and accessible compartments.
Key details
- Outbound: Departs Basel SBB on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 17:35. Arrives in Malmö at 09:35 the next morning.
- Return: Departs Malmö on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays at 18:57. Arrives in Basel at 11:30 am.
Stops include Freiburg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt Süd, Hamburg, Padborg, Kolding, Odense, Høje Taastrup and Copenhagen Airport.
This is currently the only direct rail link from Switzerland to Scandinavia, offering a comfortable, eco-friendly alternative to flying. Combined with Malmö’s vibrant coastal lifestyle and proximity to Copenhagen, the route is ideal for weekend escapes or extended Nordic tours.
What’s next?
Swedish train operator SJ’s Berlin to Stockholm night train faces uncertainty after summer 2026, but RDC plans to maintain the link with its own trains from autumn 2026.
Snälltåget will expand its Berlin to Stockholm service to six days a week from 27 March 2026, ensuring continued overnight connectivity between Germany and Sweden.
With these developments, Sweden remains accessible by night train, which supports sustainable travel trends and offers new opportunities for creative packages.
